SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC~ DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
JOB PURPOSE: The job of a mechanic is done for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on vehicles and equipment: ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Diagnoses potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purposes of determining needed repairs and/or replacements
Executes preventive maintenance programs for the purposes of maintaining vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
Maintains tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area
Prepares documentation (repairs, maintenance records, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines
Repairs vehicle and equipment systems/components for the purposes of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
Replaces defective vehicle and equipment parts/systems for the purposes of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
Inspects vehicles for the purposes of ensuring conformance to state and federal standards
Performs minor body work (front ends, fenders, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles
Participates in various activities (meetings, trainings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and conveying information
Performs any/all other duties as assigned by supervisor
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• Ability to prepare timely and accurate reports
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to utilize time wisely and efficiently
• Ability to think and work independently
• Ability to plan and organize activities effectively
• Must have good interpersonal skills and must be able to work well with supervisors and co-workers
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
lifting of at least 50 pounds
carrying of at least 50 pounds
pushing, pulling and/or above head reaching
stooping, kneeling, bending, climbing, crouching and/or crawling
Significant walking, movement and fine finger dexterity
Significant standing for prolonged periods of time
Generally:50% unassisted walking/50% free standing

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid Driver’s License/CDL preferred
• Experience working on diesel and gasoline engines and their associated parts
• Knowledge of welding, electrical components, basic computer applications, basic painting, brakes,
basic hydraulics and exhaust systems
