WHAT IS AN EDUCATION SPLOST (E-SPLOST)?

An “ESPLOST” is the option for a local school system to call a referendum approving a one percent sales tax for school construction/renovations and/or retire bond debt.  The penny sales tax spreads the responsibility of educating our children to all citizens and visitors of the community.  Anyone who spends money in McDuffie County is funding the ESPLOST, regardless of whether or not the person lives in the county.

  • No new sales taxes
  • An extension of the current sales tax, not an additional tax
  • Renewal Education Sales Tax starts after the current Education Sales Tax ends
  • Sales tax is paid by everyone who shops in McDuffie County, including visitors
  • Provides modern, safe and secure school facilities for McDuffie County children
  • Quality schools promote a better future for our students and economic growth for our community

What will the continued 1¢ Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST) provide for McDuffie County students?

The proposed projects include:

  • All Facilities—renovating, installing, repairing, furnishing, and equipping school buildings, and support, administrative, and program facilities throughout the school district, including HVAC and lighting upgrades, and installing and repairing flooring and roofing
  • Thomson Elementary School and Maxwell Elementary School – acquiring land, carrying out any necessary demolition, and acquiring, constructing, furnishing and equipping a new elementary school to consolidate the two schools, including necessary furnishings, fixtures and equipment
  • System-wide—acquiring and installing system wide network upgrades (including back-up system upgrades), software, and instructional, administrative, and other technology; acquiring school buses, maintenance and public safety vehicles, and/or maintenance, public safety, and transportation equipment; and acquiring learning resources and band equipment.
